Human Infrastructure (hereafter Human Infra) proposes Mineral Republic as a speculative national name, calling into question the modern European classificatory system that hierarchized the natural world into three โ€œkingdomsโ€ of animals, plants, and minerals. The minerals, crystals, and metals to which Human Infra attends are not simply subordinate members of such a kingdom. Rather, they exist within their own organizations, networks, and matricesโ€”cohering as active collaborators and resistive forces within political bodies, only to disperse again without warning.ย This line of inquiry resonates with the work of Soviet theorist and organizer Alexander Bogdanov and his concept of Tektology. In rejecting the logic of authoritarian science and hierarchical analogy, Bogdanov pursued a universal science of organization capable of encompassing โ€œpebbles, dreams, and telegraphic signalsโ€ alike. Following this trajectory, Human Infra traces the singular forms and organizations that minerals themselves produce.
ahryandchung, an Object Assemble Art duo, present the sculptural series 'Incohesion Assemblies'ย within Mineral Republic, tracing the marks left upon minerals by human gestures. Copper, tin, nickel, and aluminium are not merely materials, but surfaces upon which human action, technique, and time itself are inscribed. Through the act of reassembling metals discarded in the city, the work stages a tension between cohesion and dispersion. Each module performs a distinct function while remaining entangled with others, forming a system that is both fragmented and interdependent.ย These assemblies render visible the textures that emerge between human and mineral, technology and geology. Refusing to resolve into a single, unified form, they instead foreground a politics of fragments, residues, and incomplete connections.
The devices cultivated by Human Infra from the intrinsic properties of metalsโ€”copper, tin, nickel, aluminiumโ€”function as electrochemical sensory organs of minerals, while simultaneously mediating a return to the proto-electronic media of the nineteenth century. Each module both performs autonomously and reacts in concert with others, operating as a sculptural entity and as a stained, composite system. Unfolding across multiple scales, these organizational processes render visible a Res Publica of humans and things, inviting speculation on alternative forms of organization and polity that are neither vertical nor horizontal.
